A RAID array spreads data over several disks. When the controller fails, the configuration is lost, or a second disk fails during a rebuild, the array goes offline even though most data is still on the disks.
RAID tools work out the array's settings (disk order, block size, parity rotation, offset) from the disks themselves and rebuild a virtual array, without writing to the original disks. First image every member disk; work only on the copies.
Never start a rebuild or re-initialise an array that holds the only copy of your data.
